Professor Reguant was selected for this prestigious award for her research on Energy Economics.

The Government of Catalonia and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) have announced that the 2023 National Research Prize for Young Talent will be awarded to Mar Reguant, ICREA Researcher at the Institute for Economic Analysis (CSIC) and Affiliated Professor of the Barcelona School of Economics.

The National Research Prizes are awarded annually to raise society's awareness and recognition of science and the activity of researchers, patrons, entrepreneurs, communicators and entities that create companies whose work is of a scientific nature.

Only one Young Talent prize is awarded each year, and the recipient can be working in any scientific field: life and health sciences, human and social sciences, experimental science, technology, or engineering.

Understanding the economic and societal challenges of climate change

Professor Reguant was chosen to receive the Young Talent prize for her research on Energy Economics, which focuses on the economic analysis of the electricity sector and the pollution associated with electricity production. This area of research is of enormous importance today, and will be even more so in the near future, given the challenges that climate change is posing for the functioning of our economies and societies as a whole.

This is the latest in a series of prestigious awards that Professor Reguant has garnered for her research. She has also been recognized with the EAERE Award for Researchers in Environmental Economics under the Age of Forty (2019), the United States Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering or PECASE Award (2019), and the Sabadell Prize for Economic Research (2017), among other accolades.

Her current research is funded by a European Research Council Consolidator Grant, one of the most competitive international funding schemes for researchers across all disciplines.

In addition to conducting award-winning research, Professor Reguant is the director of the BSE Master's Program in the Economics of Energy, Climate Change, and Sustainability and the Barcelona Energy Economics Summer School.

The award ceremony for the National Research Prizes will take place in June 2024.

National Research Prizes in the Barcelona School of Economics community

The Young Talent Prize is announced on the same day as the National Research Prize, which honors the career trajectory of a senior researcher who has made significant contributions with an international impact in any scientific field. Four BSE Research Professors have received this distinction: Jaume Ventura (CREI, UPF and BSE), 2022; Jordi Galí (CREI, UPF and BSE), 2011; Salvador Barberà (UAB and BSE), 2007; and Andreu Mas-Colell (UPF and BSE), 1994. Professor Reguant is the first member of the BSE research community to receive the Young Talent Prize.
