BSE awarded third consecutive Severo Ochoa Research Excellence Distinction

Severo Ochoa accreditation

Note: This news article has been updated to reflect the extension of the third Severo Ochoa Excellence Accredition through the year 2024.

The Severo Ochoa award distinguishes BSE with a seal of excellence and €4 million in funding for research from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.

The Barcelona School of Economics has been accredited as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence for the third consecutive time by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.

The Severo Ochoa Excellence Accreditation recognizes and provides funding to research organizations that demonstrate scientific impact and leadership at the international level and that actively collaborate with their local social and business environments. The awards distinguish those organizations that have highly competitive, frontier research programs that are among the best in the world in their respective scientific areas.

The evaluation and selection process for Severo Ochoa Centers of Excellence is carried out by an independent, international scientific committee made up of researchers of recognized prestige and impact.

The accreditation is valid for four years. BSE has been honored as a Center of Excellence in every competitive call since the Severo Ochoa Excellence programs launched (2012-15, 2016-19, and now for 2020-24).

As a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence, BSE is proud to be part of SOMMa, an alliance of Severo Ochoa Centers and María de Maeztu Units that works to promote excellence in Spanish research and to enhance its social impact at national and international levels.

Support for path-breaking research and the researchers of the future

The Severo Ochoa Program provides €4 million in funding over four years to reinforce and develop BSE research initiatives, such as:

Severo Ochoa funding is also allocated to initiatives aimed at attracting and growing a critical mass of research talent in the BSE community, such as:
